About Kelly

Kelly at her Perceptions Exhibition, 2008

Born and educated in Northern Ireland, Kelly achieved a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design before attending the University of Ulster. She has successfully completed a BA Honours degree in Fine and Applied Art.

As a painter, Kelly takes inspiration from her surroundings.

Kelly works on Canvas and Paper using a variety of mediums such as Oil, Acrylic and Charcoal. Both the Figure and Landscape are important subjects within her work. The surface of her paintings are of particular importance and she uses a number of materials to give the surface a tactile quality.

She is influenced by the work of Abstract Expressionists such as Willem De Kooning and Hans Hoffman.

For Kelly, the process is as important as the finished painting. Kelly’s process involves building up and stripping back layers until a form emerges from the canvas. Experimentation with different ideas and materials gives her work a spontaneous and expressive quality. Kelly’s work is colourful and abstract in nature.

Kelly’s work has been shown previously by the prestigious Royal Ulster Academy and she has won major commissions including Debenhams and Barnabas Ventures.

Kelly is holding her second solo exhibition in the Down Arts Centre (13th Feb-8th March 2008).

Kelly was featured in the Artist Profile of the May 2007 edition of Northern Ireland Homes & Lifestyles Magazine.
